What’s happening?
£700m is set to be invested in the regeneration of Perry Barr between now and 2031, helping to create a place that is fit for the future, safe, green and connected. The investment will bring about positive change, improving the quality of life for those that live in Perry Barr – and creating new opportunities now and for generations to come.
A lot of the construction activity will take place between now and 2022, which will affect journeys between Walsall and Birmingham and around Perry Barr.
The plans include:
- A34 Highways Improvement Scheme
- Construction of a new bus rapid transit route; Sprint
- Improvements to Perry Barr Interchange
- Redevelopment of Alexander Stadium
- Construction of Perry Barr Village
Perry Barr Rail Station
Perry Barr Station will be closing to passengers from May 10 2021.
During this time the inside lane of Birchfield Road from Birchfield Roundabout to One-Stop shopping centre will also be closed to traffic.
Alternative travel options
During the temporary closure at Perry Barr, you will be able to access the rail network at Witton and Hamstead. Rail tickets, including season tickets, marked to/from Perry Barr will be accepted at both stations.
Rail passengers with West Midlands Railway season tickets, N train zonal tickets on a Swift card and single or return tickets that are marked with Perry Barr or Witton will be able to use their train tickets on local National Express West Midlands’ buses (listed below) to travel to/from Witton and Hamstead rail stations.

- 54/54A Hamstead Station - Perry Barr Station
The above rail tickets may also be used to travel to/from Birmingham City Centre, Aston or Walsall on the buses listed below. Train tickets can only be used to travel by bus to/from the destinations permitted on the train.
- 51 Birmingham - Aston - Perry Barr - Walsall
- 52 Perry Barr Station - Birmingham
- 33, 907, 934, 935, 936, 937/937A, 997 Perry Barr (Wellhead Lane) - Aston - Birmingham
Please note, the time of travel on the bus must match the permitted time on the train ticket. For example, off peak tickets cannot be used before 9.30am on a weekday.
